Steven Gerrard backs Alfredo Morelos despite Rangers striker’s red card

Steven Gerrard appears to have softened his stance on Alfredo Morelos, despite the Rangers striker’s fifth red card of the season.

The 22-year-old was dismissed on Sunday for elbowing Celtic captain Scott Brown, and his manager was furious after the match.

Gerrard appeared to be at the end of his tether, saying he couldn’t defend the Colombian anymore, but with a couple of days to reflect it seems his stance has softened.

“Alfredo trained yesterday, there is no issue he has showed remorse and accepted the punishment I have given,” Gerrard assured in his press conference today.

“We spoke to his representation as well and everyone is on the same page.

“I’ll continue to support and help Alfredo, he still has a lot to offer this football club but at the weekend I had to be firm and stamp down on it.

“I had similar actions when I was younger, you have to have a long look in the mirror and think about his teammates and supporters have to go through once he leaves the pitch

”You have to think of other people.

“I think he made that public himself which is the right thing to do and we draw a line under it.

“Moving forward we hope Alfredo learns the hard way and we wait now for him to return to help us in the final push.

“The players were outstanding without Alfredo on Sunday so I think we have more than enough quality to get by without him.”

Morelos faces a four game ban for his red card, with Ryan Kent also likely to be given a ban for striking Brown in the face.
