Alfredo Morelos antics could cost him a big money move says Barry Ferguson

Barry Ferguson reckons Alfredo Morelos is on the verge of being branded “damaged goods” by clubs who have been monitoring the form of the 29 goal striker.

The midfielder, who took no prisoners as a player and had his fair share of scrapes himself, is frustrated by the Colombians propensity to self-combust in the big games.

Talking to the Daily Record he said: “Sadly, he’s no nearer being able to cope with the big games and that won’t have gone unnoticed at the clubs who have been weighing up a big move for the Colombian this summer.

“Big clubs don’t buy damaged goods, they certainly don’t pay over the odds for players who all too often leave their team in the lurch.

“No matter how much I rate him and believe he’s a fantastic player, he’s letting the club down.

“He’s letting his team-mates down, the supporters down, his family down and himself down.

“As much as I hate to say it I’m one of his biggest fans but Rangers should now look at cashing in on him and if they get a decent offer then they should look at it.

“But it’s a waste. He has everything in his locker to become a top, top striker but like I say, I can’t defend what he did to Scott Brown.

“I can no longer defend him. For months now I’ve backed Alfredo Morelos, my support has been absolute but sorry, enough is enough, yesterday was once too many.

Ferguson believes needs to understand that opponents in Scotland will attempt to get under his skin and provoke a reaction.

He said: “He doesn’t play the game, people will always try and get a rise out of him and we saw at Celtic Park that they don’t have to try too hard.

“No doubt there were Celtic players trying to bait him and maybe having a wee rap at his ankles but there comes a stage in your life when you need to walk away.

“So much of the debate about Morelos this season and beyond has been far too much centred on controversial incidents.

“I’ve always felt he needs to get away from the self-destruct button which he’s been pressing far too often but I’m now doubting whether he can.

“It’s once too many and it’s now impossible to back him. I was one of the ones who stood behind him during previous incidents.

“When his conduct let him down I looked at a young boy who was miles from home and managing to bully Premiership defences and he had my admiration. No longer.

“At some stage he needed to grow up but we are back at stage one with him and you do get players with whom the penny never drops and Morelos won’t be the first or the last.”
